Nahum 1

1. An oracle concerning Nineveh. The book of the vision of Nahum of Elkosh.

God's Wrath Against Nineveh

2. The Lord is a jealous and avenging God; 2 the Lord is avenging and wrathful; 2 the Lord takes vengeance on his adversaries 2 and keeps wrath for his enemies.

3. The Lord is slow to anger and great in power, 3 and the Lord will by no means clear the guilty. 3 His way is in whirlwind and storm, 3 and the clouds are the dust of his feet.

4. He rebukes the sea and makes it dry; 4 he dries up all the rivers; 4 Bashan and Carmel wither; 4 the bloom of Lebanon withers.

5. The mountains quake before him; 5 the hills melt; 5 the earth heaves before him, 5 the world and all who dwell in it.

6. Who can stand before his indignation? 6 Who can endure the heat of his anger? 6 His wrath is poured out like fire, 6 and the rocks are broken into pieces by him.

7. The Lord is good, 7 a stronghold in the day of trouble; 7 he knows those who take refuge in him.

8. But with an overflowing flood 8 he will make a complete end of the adversaries,[a] 8 and will pursue his enemies into darkness.

9. What do you plot against the Lord? 9 He will make a complete end; 9 trouble will not rise up a second time.

10. For they are like entangled thorns, 10 like drunkards as they drink; 10 they are consumed like stubble fully dried.

11. From you came one 11 who plotted evil against the Lord, 11 a worthless counselor.

12. Thus says the Lord, 12 “Though they are at full strength and many, 12 they will be cut down and pass away. 12 Though I have afflicted you, 12 I will afflict you no more.

13. And now I will break his yoke from off you 13 and will burst your bonds apart.”

14. The Lord has given commandment about you: 14 “No more shall your name be perpetuated; 14 from the house of your gods I will cut off 14 the carved image and the metal image. 14 I will make your grave, for you are vile.”

15. [b] Behold, upon the mountains, the feet of him 15 who brings good news, 15 who publishes peace! 15 Keep your feasts, O Judah; 15 fulfill your vows, 15 for never again shall the worthless pass through you; 15 he is utterly cut off.
